Rome, GA- Bank of the Empire State $1 18__ UNL Proof PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ.The bank was organized in 1856 and continued in business through the war years. The bank survived the Civil War, but closed shortly after in about 1866; a victim of being on the losing side. The design features a sailor seated at left with his sextant, Liberty seated with the Georgia coat of arms at top center, a small view of a duck family at bottom center, and an oval female portrait at right. The note has a red-brown overall tint and an orange and white 1-1-1 protector. There were a large number of Proofs from this bank in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale, but the discerning collector will appreciate that this note is printed on India paper with the usual POCs in the signature lines and is free of flaws. Many Proofs from this bank have nagging flaws and imperfections. There are also several different protectors and overprint varieties, making it difficult to exactly identify the number of any particular variety examples appearing in the sale. Based on post sale auction appearances, this is far from being the most common variety.
