Fascinating and Unique Tobacco Worm Vignetted Scrip

Eatonton, GA- Unknown Issuer $1 Dec. 17, 1839 PCGS Apparent Very Fine 20.
This former Alan Dorris collection note sold in January 2015 was a favorite at lot viewing there. The top center vignette is a quaint piece of unnamed folk art portraying a "tobacco worm." We have never seen this anywhere else and would appeal to several topical collectors looking at the note. Noted as "Unknown Issuer" by PCGS, the filling in observed may be false. However, the 1839 date fits the period for the style and the ship emblems in the side panels match up with notes from the era. The PCGS apparent warnings are edge and internal splits and tears which are meaningless on this only reported example which still maintains much of its eye appeal. This realized $1,116.25 at the January 2015 FUN sale. However, it is one of those obsolete note treasures that is priceless when it joins its next cabinet for enjoyment. Unique in so many ways.
