Athens, GA- Georgia Rail Road & Banking Company, Augusta Branch $10 18__ G26 Proof PCGS Choice New 63.The enterprise was founded in 1833 as a railroad and canal company but soon set its eyes on banking and was chartered under this name in 1835. The company survived the Civil War with most of its railroad operations ultimately becoming part of CSX Transportation while most of its banking operations were ultimately made part of Wells Fargo. The company moved its headquarters from Athens to Augusta in 1840-41. This early note has a full and cut down version of the same train vignette at center and at right. Two TEN cameo-like medallion head counters flank the center vignette and another small train vignette appears at bottom center. The note is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with the usual POCs in the signature lines. Formerly part of the Eric P. Newman Collection, we believe that this note is one of perhaps 2-4 Proofs of this design surviving.
