Bold Elk Horn Bank $1 Proof

Elk Horn, WI - Elk Horn Bank $1 18__ WI-165 G2a. Proof. PCGS Choice New 63.
A rarely seen Wisconsin title. This proof is one of only two known in private hands, both from the Newman Collection sheet. The other two extant are on the sheet at the Wisconsin Historical Society. Thoughtfully engraved by Wellstood, Hay & Whiting, New York, it was printed on India paper and mounted on its original cardstock. The town's elk's head emblem is featured prominently at top center. At lower right, Justice is seated on a bale next to the "1" counter on which she rests her hand. Cherubs flank the cartouche containing the signature lines and a red ONE protector in script. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" and "Mounted on Cardstock" as made. The other $1 proof from the sheet realized $1,997.50 in Newman Part VII. This is a very bold proof, and the red protector provides striking contrast.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
