Winsted, CT- Winsted Bank $2 18__ as G8 Proof PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
The Winsted Bank was organized in 1848 and remained in business until 1864 (Haxby lists 1868). Its life was cut short by a major robbery that occurred in November, 1861. This crippled the bank's efforts to obtain a national bank charter later because it had insufficient net worth. The $2 features a portrait of Zachary Taylor at left and vignettes of men trying to get two horses across railroad tracks at top center, an arm and hammer at bottom center, and Proserpina at right. It is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock and has no forms of cancellation present in the signature lines. There was one example of this design (possibly this note) in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale (Lot 143) with no other public auction appearances known to us in at least the last decade. Very rare and possibly unique in Proof form.
