West Winsted, CT- Hurlbut Bank $2 18__ as G4 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ.
The bank began life as a free bank in 1855 before adopting a state charter. It remained in business until 1865 when it was succeeded by the Hurlbut National Bank of Winsted in 1865. The $2 features a large vignette of a farm wife calling field hands to lunch by blowing a large horn. The state treasurer die, a small oval female portrait, and a large red 2 protector complete the design. The note is printed on India paper with the usual small POCs in the signature lines. While a significant number of proofs from this bank appeared in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale, only five examples of this variety appeared.
