West Killingly, CT- Eastern Bank $5 185_ as G8a Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64 EPQ.
The bank was chartered in 1851, organized in 1852, and in business for a short period of time until it was declared a fraudulent institution and closed by state authorities in early 1853. The design features a farmer sitting in a large V at center flanked by two female portraits. The note is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with the usual POCs in the signature lines and affixed to a Danforth Bald archive book card. There were two examples of this note in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale (Lots 130-131), but we are unaware of any public auction appearances in at least the last decade. This suggests that the surviving Proof population is quite small; perhaps limited to the notes that were in the archives sale.

    Estimate: $500 - $750.
