Southport, CT- Southport Bank $3 18__ as G6a Proof PMG About Uncirculated 55.
The bank, formerly a branch of the Connecticut Bank, Bridgeport, operated under this banner from 1851 until 1865 when it was succeeded by the Southport National Bank in 1864/65. With a light red tint and a darker red THREE/3 counter, this note depicts a Native American family gazing at symbols of encroaching "Civilization" in the forms of a distant town and ships. This was a popular theme on antebellum bank notes. The note is printed on India paper with the usual small POCs in the signature lines. A few light folds indicate light handling. This variety, with only the Danforth Bald imprint, was not represented in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale and we are unaware of any public appearances in at least the last decade.
