Pawcatuck, CT- Pawcatuck Bank $1 18__ G2 Proof PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.
The bank was organized in 1849 and remained in business until it became the Pawcatuck National Bank in 1865. The $1 design features vignettes of two Native American males standing at left, Proserpina reclining by a cornucopia at center, an oval portrait of Washington at the top right, and Ceres kneeling talking with another female at the bottom right. The design is completed by a small vignette of boxes and barrels at bottom center and a large gray ONE protector. The note is printed on India paper mounted on card affixed to a Danforth Bald archive book card and has the usual small POCs in the signature lines. There were two examples of this note in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale that, in all probability, represent the total number of Proofs of this design extant. We are unaware of any public auction appearances since this note last crossed the auction block in our January 2010 Signature auction.
