Hartford, CT- Hartford Bank at the Merchants Bank in the City of New York $1 18__ G380 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
The Hartford Bank was organized in 1792, and remained in business until 1865, when it became the Hartford National Bank. This early note, designed by Abner Reed, was rather elegant for the time with a nicely done vignette of an allegorical woman standing holding a sheaf of grain and the Connecticut coat of arms in a shield. The note is printed on thick tan laid paper with "Hartford" written on both signature lines. This note's provenance goes back to the Reed/Rollinson Archive sale conducted in 1999. This historic note is excessively rare with perhaps 2-3 examples known.
From the Charles R. Pease, Jr. Collection, Part III
