Hartford, CT- Farmers and Mechanics Bank $3 18__ G16 Proof PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.The bank was organized in 1833 and remained in business until becoming the Farmers and Mechanics National Bank of Hartford in 1865. This design is beautifully laid out with the appearance of having a panoramic vignette that stretches the full width of the note featuring Liberty standing near a federal shield and eagle at left and Agriculture reclining next to a cornucopia gazing at a floating allegorical maiden supporting a shield bearing a 3 at right. A lovely note printed on India paper with no POCs or other forms of cancellation. This note design was not represented in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale but was known to and illustrated by Haxby in Proof form. We are aware of only one other public auction appearance for this design in the last decade; an impaired example with large cut-outs in the signature lines and edge tears. All of this suggests high rarity, with perhaps 2-3 examples known.
