Description
Danbury, CT- Wooster Bank $5 18__ as G6 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.The Wooster Bank was organized in 1854 and very quickly merged with the Danbury Bank during the course of the next year. The $5 features an oval portrait of the bank's namesake, Revolutionary War hero General David Wooster, who was wounded at the Battle of Ridgefield, CT and died of his wounds on May 22, 1777 in Danbury. In addition, an oversize vignette of the United States Capitol (before it was remodeled beginning in the 1850s) appears on the right end. The state treasurer die at bottom left, a small allegorical maiden vignette at bottom center, and a large red FIVE protector complete the design. The American Bank Note Company imprint is NOT the ABNCo but rather a name used between 1854 and 1858 by Jocelyn, Draper, Welsh & Co. The note is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock without any forms of cancellation present. We are aware of only a single example that appeared in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale as part of Lot 50. Very rare and possibly unique.
