Columbus, GA- Insurance Bank of Columbus $1 G2 Proof
The first in a wonderful set of Proof examples from this interesting bank. This Proof, which is ex-Bob Vlack collection, is from the bank's first issue, and is listed as SENC and "No Description Available" in Haxby. In January of 1843, Col. Burton Hepburn entered the Director's room of the bank with the intent of attacking the President, Daniel MacDougald, with whom he had a business quarrel of unknown origin. MacDougald, one of Columbus' first residents and a General in the Georgia militia that had defended the city from attacks by Creek Indians some years before, was forewarned and prepared. Hepburn came armed with a cane, and two pistols, but MacDougald drew first and shot him dead before Hepburn fired a shot. MacDougald was arrested, but swiftly exonerated by a jury. Shortly thereafter, the bank relocated to Macon. PCGS Apparent Choice About New 58, with a couple of tiny flaws that affect nothing, along with 4 POC.
