Grand Junction, CO- C.P. Bliss $3 Advertising Note ND
A quick search of the Federal Census points to Courtland P. Bliss as the issuer of this note. Born in 1856, it seems unlikely that he would have started his business any sooner than perhaps the early to mid 1880s. He is listed in several city directories as being in the dry goods business as late as 1907 at 412 Main Street in Grand Junction. This all suggests that he was probably using this note, which offered a 5% discount on cash purchases of at least $5, between roughly 1880 and perhaps 1900. The note bears a passing resemblance, in some respects, to $5 Legal Tender and Demand Notes that were still in circulation. PMG grades this note Choice Very Fine 35, noting a small body hole that is hidden in the left corner of the green underprint. There is not much opportunity to get anything remotely resembling an obsolete note from Colorado; this is your chance!
