Washington, AR- The County of Hempstead $5 Mar. 19, 1873 Rothert UNL
At first blush this appears to be a check or draft, but a closer inspection reveals that the denomination ($5) is printed and that it is a circulating note payable to the bearer. In addition, the back of the note has the annotation that it was not paid on May 27, 1873 "for want of funds." The note also has a nice embossed seal resembling the reverse of seated liberty coinage of the period. PCGS grades the note Choice About New 55, and it is the first of its kind that we have seen or heard of.
