Washington, AR- Real Estate Bank of the State of Arkansas $5 Mar. 1, 1840 G90 Rothert 680-1
Washington served as a location for one of the bank's four branches. The Real Estate Bank was opened in 1838 but was soon overwhelmed by a bad national economy and less than prudent business practices. It had a slow lingering death that did not completely conclude until after the Civil War. From a practical standpoint, the bank was dead in 1842-43 when its assets were assigned to receivers. This busy $5, issued in 1840, depicts the state seal, a busy wharf scene, and, for good measure, Washington on horseback. PCGS Extremely Fine 40 with small repairs noted.
