Washington, AR- Exchange Company at Washington $2 Aug. 1, 1862 Rothert 684-14
Washington was the temporary Arkansas state capital during the Civil War. Also, it has been said that Jim Bowie's first Bowie knife was produced at a blacksmith's shop in Washington. Due to the failure of two State Banks, a state constitutional amendment was passed in 1846 outlawing banks. As a way around the amendment, exchange companies were created in the 1860's. A.B. Williams, a Hempstead County judge at this time, and a state senator a few years later, signed this note as president. H. Gardes signed as cashier. Two different varieties of notes are listed, with one having a name listed of Washington Exchange Company and the other design with Exchange Company at Washington. There were six denominations of notes for each of the two varieties- 10¢, 25¢, 50¢, $1, $2, and $3. All six denominations of both styles are listed as R-7 in the Rothert reference, indicating 1 to 5 known examples. PMG assigned a grade of Fine 12 to this $2 note printed on the backs of $5 remainders from the Real Estate Bank of the State of Arkansas. A Washington on horseback vignette is seen. A great note for the Arkansas specialist.
