Van Buren, AR- White & Hanley 50¢ Jan. 25, 1862 Rothert 665-2 PCGS Very Fine 25.
Van Buren, in northwestern Arkansas on the border with the Indian Territory, fell to Union forces at the end of December, 1862 and was the final action that secured most of the northwestern part of the state for the Union. This is an interesting note that was honored by multiple merchants. This note, for example, was also receivable at Stirman & Dickson in Fayetteville and M. Mayers & Bro. in Forth Smith. The note, in nice condition and endorsed on the back by White & Hanley, was redeemable in either merchandise or Confederate Treasury Notes in sums of $5, $10, $20, or $50. Ex: Eric P. Newman Collection.
