Monticello, AR- Corporation of Monticello 50¢ June 2, 1862 Rothert 495-1 PCGS Apparent Very Fine 25.
While at the time the assurance on this note that it was payable in "Sound Confederate Funds" was essentially true, some might, by 1865, consider that statement to be an oxymoron. This municipal issue, like most Arkansas scrip notes, is a simple typeset design printed on plain paper with minimal ornamentation--and rare. PCGS notes several edge and internal splits and tears, accounting for the Apparent designation. On notes of this rarity it will not make much difference to serious collectors. We have offered two examples of this denomination in previous auctions with this being the nicer of the two. Ex. Eric P. Newman Collection.
