    Description

Little Rock, AR - Corporation of Little Rock 50 Cents Apr. 9, 1841 Rothert 423-2. PCGS Fine 12 Apparent.
The notes from this series are a bit mysterious, and this might be a contemporary counterfeit. This issuer is elaborated on as a counterfeiting gang in the Rothert reference; it included banking and political insiders, creating banknotes and corporation "shinplasters" like this that were difficult to detect. The printing quality is certainly similar to earlier series genuine bills. This note is plated in Rothert on page 176, and the full page essay on the perpetrators is engaging. This Hard Times era Little Rock municipal note was printed on white paper, and shows the imprint "Colby / P'r." in a cartouche at the base. A stagecoach vignette, with the driver cracking his whip, is at top center. A "Tape Repaired Edge Tear at Bottom Left" is mentioned by grading. This is another fascinating Newman Collection note, exemplifying the study that continues in diverse Obsolete currency.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
