    Description

Little Rock, AR - Bank of the State of Arkansas $20 Post Note 18__ AR-10 G56 Rothert 400-10 Proof. PCGS Choice About New 55 Apparent.
There were several rare banknotes from this issuer in the Newman Collection. Often, the notes were used as the Rothert book's listings; sometimes the plated example such as this example. A very sharply printed and well-engraved India paper on original card proof by Underwood, Bald, Spencer & Hufty. At top center, shepherds are shearing sheep in a field. At the left end, a hunter or early soldier is within an oval. At the right end is a standing draped allegorical female with "20" die and caduceus. The Apparent designation by PCGS was due to standard Hole Punch Cancels and a "Small Edge Tear in Left Margin". The prior minor flaw is trivial compared to the superior rarity and pedigree of this beautiful proof. This was last sold in the Newman Part VI sale, April 2015, where it realized a conservative $493.50.
