Helena, AR- Phillips County Levee Scrip $1000 July 20,1861 Rothert 278-3 PCGS Apparent Very Fine 30.
Helena, AR fell to Union forces on July 4, 1863, the same day that Vicksburg was taken and Gettysburg ended in a Union victory. Many see July 4, 1863 as the day the war was lost for the Confederacy. Given its location on the Mississippi River, the county's use of this Levee Scrip to pay for work done on the levee makes complete sense. This scrip was issued just weeks after Arkansas was admitted to the Confederacy. It is the only $1000 denomination known from the state and is likely one of two known examples. PCGS notes tape repaired edge splits and tears. Ex: Eric P. Newman Collection.
