    Description

    Fulton, AR- M.C. Cummings 50¢ Mar. 12, 1862 Rothert 247-1 PCGS Fine 12.
Fulton is located on the Red River in southwestern Arkansas and was an important transportation and shipping center until railroads proved to be too much competition. Although several skirmishes took place around Fulton there were no major battles during the Civil War. It was a tough decision if you wanted to redeem this note; you could be paid in meal, flour, lumber, blacksmith work, bank bills, War or State Bonds or Treasury Warrants. You were probably best served by taking your redemption in flour or meal. The back of the note has a rather ornate M.C. Cummings rubberstamp. Ex: Eric P. Newman Collection.
