Fort Smith City, AR - M. Mayers & Bro. - Payable in Multiple Locations 50 Cents Dec. 18, 1861 Rothert 234-10. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent.
This appears to be a hybrid of a first and third series note. Printed on brown paper. Similar to Rothert 234-1. Plate letter B is at lower left. At the left end, the location of Stirman & Dickson, Fayetteville is enclosed in a fancy cartouche. The right end has an ornamental border. The top border has White & Hanley, Van Buren; F. H. Nash, Fort Gibson, Cherokee Nation (spelled out) payables. On the bottom border are Alexander & Allen, Sherman, Texas; J. M. Smoot, Denton, Texas payables. In the obligation, the "B" in Bearer is over the "C" in CENTS. The red Mayers stamp, with DRUGGISTS inverted is across the back and shows partially to the face. Noted with "Large Edge and Internal Tears; Small Holes." Though this has faults, it is a peculiar type and likely rare.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
