Scrip Redeemed at the Cherokee Nation

Fort Smith, AR - E. S. Mitchell, Redeemed at Doaksville and Boggy Depot, C.N., by J.P. Kingsbury & Co. $1 May 1, 1862 Rothert 236-9. PCGS Very Fine 20 Apparent.
This is a rare and fascinating Fort Smith note from E. S. Mitchell that was also redeemed at the Cherokee Nation in the adjoining Indian Territory under Confederate control at the time. Printed on the back of an engraved store scrip note (the issuer unknown to us) by Foster, Printer, Fort Smith. A pattern border is all around and the typeset text is within. ONE DOLLAR is across the center, and the upper corners have bolded "$1" counters. The Cherokee Nation payable clause is across the top. There are "Small Edge Tears," not readily noticed from the face. Sharply signed and historic.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
