Fayetteville, AR- Bank of the State of Arkansas $5 Nov. 1, 1838 G152 Rothert 186-6
This note was originally a post note, designed before this bank suspended specie payments after running through funds raised through an issuance of state bonds. The law prohibited the issuance of post notes, and their issue was suspended after judgment was obtained against the bank. That failed to deter the bank, however, which simply hand altered the note removing the interest payment provision, but still leaving the note as a post note payable twelve months after its issue date. Fine, and very rare, having sold for $920 in our January, 2006 auction.
