Fayetteville, AR- Bank of Dixie $1 Jan. 8, 1862 Rothert 187-4 PMG Fine 12.
This is a rare private "bank" scrip note issued and signed by W. L. Wilson; it uses a "Bank of Dixie" title in the left cartouche. Wilson signed Bank of the State, Fayetteville notes as bank president over 20 years before with little change in his hand. This $1 note was payable in Confederate notes or Arkansas war bonds. The "1" counters to the left and right of the obligation are unusually designed. The Newman Collection example, which was the only $1 note from this issuer we have had in any of our sales, was stained, repaired, and had internal splits and tears and still realized $376. This piece is far nicer and resides in a comment free PMG holder.
