El Dorado, AR- Union County $10 Mar. 27, 1864 Rothert-UNL PMG Very Fine 30.
An isolated farming community, El Dorado saw no military engagements during the Civil War. Unlisted in Rothert in any form, this note was issued late in the War and was payable in either Confederate notes or Arkansas Treasury Notes, either of which was a rather perilous medium of payment in the closing weeks of the war. Your cataloger suspects that most recipients took the county up on its offer to receive these notes for all county dues. Printed on tissue-like paper, its survival in such nice condition borders on a miracle. Like many notes in Len's collection, we believe that this note is, at the very least, a great rarity.
