Columbia, AR- Real Estate Bank of the State of Arkansas at Van Buren $5 Jan. 1, 1840 Haxby UNL Rothert UNL PMG Very Fine 25.
The Real Estate Bank of the State of Arkansas was headquartered in Little Rock and had branches in Columbia, Helena, Van Buren, and Washington. The bank opened in 1838 but the Van Buren branch was not organized until 1840. According to several sources, the Van Buren branch did not issue its own notes but some notes of other branches were made payable at Van Buren. That is the case with this previously unknown $5 (Haxby lists only a $50 with this alteration of payment location - G56). Due to rampant fraud connected with the bank's funding, the bank was shuttered during the course of 1842-43 although it took more than another decade to nail the coffin lid down on this institution. Printed by Rawdon Wright & Hatch New York, this attractive note features a vignette of a resting farm family and is on bright paper with clear margins. The note is free of any condition qualifiers and faces up quite well. A rare note making its first appearance in any of our auctions.
