    Description

Brownsville, AR- Prairie County 10¢ Nov. 13, 1862 Rothert 81-2 PMG Very Fine 20.
The Battle of Brownsville was one of the opening engagements of the Little Rock Campaign. On August 25, 1863, Union cavalry units pushed back Confederate forces six miles but were ultimately repulsed. This was but a temporary respite as relentless pressure led to the surrender of the state capital on September 10, 1863. This county issue was made in November, 1862 and was payable to the bearer "out of any money in the Treasury." The printer, not covering himself in glory, managed to misspell Treasurer as "Treasarer." The note's legitimacy is verified by the presence of an embossed round seal. This is the only example that we have offered in any of our auctions, with one previous appearance in 2016.
