Description

Tuscumbia, AL- C.J. Garner 50¢ Jan. 1, 1838 Gunther-Derby AO-466-$.50a Rosene-UNL Remainder PMG Uncirculated 62.
C.J. Garner has been identified as the issuer of this series of notes by Tennessee researchers Dennis Schafluetzel and Tom Carson. C.J. Garner appears in numerous ads in the Tuscumbia North Alabamian circa 1837-38 as the manager for lotteries held for the benefit of the Tuscumbia Masonic Hall. A few articles indicate that he was also active in the Masons in other roles. It is therefore unclear whether being a lottery broker-manager was his actual occupation or was something he did on a part-time basis just for the Masonic Hall project in Tuscumbia. A C.J. Garner is listed as a watchmaker / jeweler in Little Rock, AR, from 1845-47, but there is no definite proof that this is the same person. Likewise, although the note is clearly datelined Nashville, TN, there is no definitive evidence supporting why. The design features a vignette of ships in a crowded harbor flanked by others of Liberty seated at left and a sailor standing by a huge anchor at right. PMG mentions that the note has been previously mounted and has a bit of ink burn from handwriting in the left margin.
