Selma, AL- Commercial Bank of Alabama $3 Dec. 9, 1861
From left to right, the portraits are of William J. Norris, William R. King, and Phillip J. Weaver. Norris (1808-85) served as president of the bank and signed this note as such. King (1786-1853) was a U.S. Senator from Alabama, served as minister to France, and was Vice President under Franklin Pierce. However, King died just over a month after being sworn in. Weaver (1797-1865) and Norris helped establish Bryce hospital in 1857. Weaver was recognized as the first permanent settler in Selma. He served as a Colonel in the Confederacy and died of injuries that were the result of a rifle butt to his head after he refused to relinquish his sword. The red "3" overprints at the lower corners add to the eye appeal of this Fine example with a small skin mark above King's portrait. The Haxby reference listed this scarce $3 denomination with a value of $75 in Fine when the book was published in 1988. The Commercial Bank of Alabama was in business from 1856 until failing in 1867.
