Ft. Gaines Tanyard, AL- C.P. Clayton & Co. 50¢ July 4, 1862 Rosene UNL
A most interesting piece which is receivable "in payment of all dues and for Leather." From the issue location and the obligation one can discern that this was a tanning operation of some kind. Ft. Gaines would have made a perfect location, as it sits at the end of Dauphin Island, a barrier island off the coast of Mobile Bay, and a place that in 1862 would have been virtually uninhabited save for Fort Gaines itself. That fort, originally built in 1821, was an integral part of the Confederate defensive network at the approaches to Mobile Bay, and was taken by Union ground forces after Admiral Farragut's ships had passed the fort and destroyed the Confederate fleet at the Battle of Mobile Bay on August 5, 1864. Nice Very Fine, unlisted in Rosene and likely unique, ex-Dr. Walter B. Jones collection sale, lot 5627.
