    Description

    Fort Gaines Tanyard, AL- M.M. Greenway & Co. 25¢ July 4, 1862 Rosene 97-1
A most interesting piece which is receivable "in payment of all dues and for Leather." From the issue location and the obligation, one can discern that this was a tanning operation of some kind. Ft. Gaines would have made a perfect location, as it sits at the end of Dauphin Island, a barrier island off the coast of Mobile Bay and a place that in 1862 would have been virtually uninhabited save for Fort Gaines itself. That fort, originally built in 1821, was an integral part of the Confederate defensive network at the approaches to Mobile Bay and was taken by Union ground forces after Admiral Farragut's ships had passed the fort and destroyed the Confederate fleet at the Battle of Mobile Bay on August 5, 1864. PCGS Very Fine 30. The 50¢ example we offered in the same grade last April realized $1350, and this piece, which is the Rosene plate note should easily achieve the same level.
