Wytheville, VA- Wythe County $8 Dec. 12, 1863 PCGS About New 50.
This certificate provided $8.00 to the wife of John Richardson who was a member of the 51st Virginia Infantry Regiment. The 51st fought in numerous engagements with the majority of the surviving members of the regiment taken prisoner after the Battle of Waynesboro, when Union forces obliterated Jubal Early's Valley Army. There were two John Richardsons serving in the 51st, one (John F.) was captured at the Battle of Waynesboro on March 2, 1865 while the other (John C.) was killed at the Battle of Fayetteville, VA (now West Virginia) on September 10, 1862. It is not clear which soldier's family received this but only John F. Richardson was still alive when this was issued.
