Washington, DC- Southern Manufacturers Bank $2 Apr. 15, 1852 as G4 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 63 EPQ.
The Southern Manufacturers Bank opened in 1852, closing about three years later. This note features a large vignette of an eagle perched on a tree limb as well as an oval portrait of John Marshall and a vignette of four men and women representing various themes. The note is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock and has the usual POCs in the signature lines. One example of this variety was in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale as part of Lot 216. There has been only one public auction appearance of which we are aware in the last seventeen years. Our consignor purchased this example in that sale in 2003 and it is extremely likely that this note is unique or nearly so.
