    Description

Washington, DC- Farmers & Merchants Bank $1.25 July 10, 1862 G14a PMG Choice About Unc 58 EPQ.
The central vignette on this odd denomination D.C. note shows what the U.S. Capitol would look like when it was finally finished in 1866. A close inspection of the vignette suggests that the central dome depicted was added to an older vignette, the building with the much shorter central dome. This fully issued note with a red "1.25" protector was issued as another means of making change in a "no coin" environment. It could be used, for example, when a $2 note was tendered to pay for a 75¢ purchase.
