Ware, MA- Hampshire Manufacturers Bank $10 18__ G40a Remainder / Specimen PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
The bank was incorporated in 1825 and remained in business until it became the Ware National Bank in 1864-65. This note is not technically a proof and is probably better classified as a specimen. It is printed on regular bank note paper with the usually expected POCs in the signature lines and was once part of a New England Bank Note Co. archive book. A neatly penned date December 22, 1851 appears on the back at both ends which may be when the double red X protectors were added. The opinion was offered in 2006 that this interesting and historic note was unique and nothing has changed in the intervening fourteen years to alter that assessment.
