Terre Haute, IN- Southern Bank of Indiana $10 Nov. 1, 1853 Remainder G8a Wolka 2350-15 PCGS Extremely Fine 40.
The bank opened in 1852 as a state-chartered free bank. It remained in business until 1863 when it became the First National Bank of Terre Haute. Not surprisingly, the bank left no outstanding free bank circulation. The $10 features a vignette of farmers driving livestock at center, flanked by the state banking die and Liberty standing at left, and a Native American male at right. The note also has a decorative red-orange denominational back. Formerly part of the Eric P Newman Collection
