    Description

Sumter, SC- Town of Sumter $3 Mar. 1, 1866 Remainder Sheheen 1094 PCGS Extremely Fine 40.
An exceedingly rare municipal scrip note, this piece hails from this town named after the "The Fighting Gamecock," General Thomas Sumter, a Revolutionary War hero. His vignette is used on South Carolina Post-War notes. Austin Sheheen, Jr. assigned this note type his highest Rarity-8 rating (one known, which is plated in his book and on the back cover). This is a new example for the collecting community, bringing the number of known examples to two. This uniface note was printed on bond paper with the imprint of Macoy, Herwig & Vidal, Charleston, S.C. At the top slightly right of center is the location and date between two different denominational counters. The far left shows a standing Indian princess and crouching Ceres, adapted from Danforth, Bald & Co. notes of the 1850s. At bottom center is a small beehive, and across the face are the obligation, location and title. There are light vertical folds only in addition to a small spindle hole. This is an understated, yet beautiful note and a great opportunity for South Carolina specialists.
