    Description

Stockbridge, MA- Housatonic Bank $10 June 1, 1854 G64 Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
Chartered in 1825, the Housatonic Bank continued in business until becoming the Housatonic National Bank in 1865. A busy note with vignettes of Liberty offering an eagle a drink, a large cattle lot scene, and a Native American maiden holding an ear of corn and an X as well as a tiny vignette of two horses. The note is printed on India paper mounted on cardstock with subtle slit cancels rather than the usual POCs in the signature lines. PMG notes a very light damp stain on the cardstock that does not seem to affect the note. Issues from this bank were not represented in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale. Some sources suggest a surviving population of perhaps three or four examples of this Proof design.
