St. Paul, MN- Treasurer of the City of St. Paul $5 18__ Hewitt C280-D5b Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
The city issued dollar denominated scrip between 1857 and roughly 1864 as a means of providing currency for local commerce and funding city needs. This $5 depicts a cow and her calf fleeing an oncoming passenger train and also has a large red FIVE protector. It is printed on India paper with the usual small POCs in the signature lines. PMG notes minor repairs (which appear to be limited to a couple of short edge tears at the POCs that have been sealed). Hewitt's census indicates a known population of three Proofs of this design which would square with the number of examples appearing in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale.
