Description
Inspired Union Bank of Missouri $100 Color Proof
St. Louis, MO - Union Bank of Missouri $100 Branch Payable MO-65 G96a SENC. Proof. PCGS Choice About New 58 Apparent. The highest denomination from the bank and series. A stunning and inspired engraved plate by the American Bank Note Company printed this Obsolete banknote jewel. The color and the vignettes work in tandem to create one of the most beautiful late designs from the Obsolete banknote era. To the right of the arced vermillion title a large vignette shows Liberty displaying a large shield on which is a bas-relief bust of George Washington in profile. To the left of the shield, a Continental soldier, leaning on the barrel of his rifle, looks on pensively; his tricorn hat is on the ground behind him. Two Native Americans also ponder the portrait. Under the title, America, holding a capped liberty pole floats in the clouds with a shield and olive branch. The eagle beside her is perched on the fasces. A Millard Fillmore portrait is at the lower right. In vermillion are the title, upper right counter surround, and pair of small "100" protectors over the signature block. Noted as "Hole Punch Cancelled" as made and with "Mounting Remnants on Back; Small Edge Tears." This is visually striking and was a key proof obtained from D.C. Wismer. This has all the hallmarks of a proof with wide appeal, and we expect serious competition for the opportunity to be its next caretaker. This Missouri proof merits the distinction of being a legendary piece of Obsolete currency.

Truth Seeker: The Life of Eric P. Newman (softcover)
A powerful and intimidating dealer of the 1960s, backed by important colleagues, was accused of selling fraudulent gold coins and ingots to unsuspecting numismatists. Who would go up against a man like that and, over the course of decades, prove the fraud? Who would expose a widely respected scholar as a thief, then doggedly pursue recovery of coins that the scholar had stolen from an embarrassed numismatic organization, all over the objections of influential collectors who had bought coins with clouded titles? Eric P. Newman would - and did. Reserve your copy today.
