Sparta, IL- United States Stock Bank $2 Oct. 1, 1860 as G4a Proof PCGS Very Choice New 64.
The bank, which opened in 1860, was a rarity among Illinois free banks that suffered wholesale failures in 1861. It survived virtually the entire war and closed, apparently voluntarily, around 1865. The bank probably owes its survival to the fact that it was chartered under much stricter regulations from the state. The $2 design is quite striking with an unusual vignette of a wounded Revolutionary War soldier being carried into a house. The state banking die appears at right and the note has a large red-orange 2 protector at center along with red-orange borders and a protector panel over the signature lines. The note is printed on India paper with the usual POCs in the signature lines and a short edge tear at top center that does not draw attention to itself.
