Shawneetown, IL- Bank of Illinois at Louisville (KY) office $5 18__ G160 Proof PMG Uncirculated 60.
The Bank of Illinois was in business from 1813-1823 before closing and being later revived in1835. It failed in 1842. The office in Louisville, KY is believed to have been operating in the 1830s. The note, designed by Charles Toppan & Co. (operating under that name from 1830-34), had a rather intricate design for the time, with the state seals of fourteen selected states flanking a small framed portrait of Washington. In addition to the usual POCs in the signature lines, PMG notes internal tears and evidence of previous mounting (primarily in the form of paper thins in the top and bottom margins). Based upon a comparison of the POC locations and telltale paper thins, it appears that this is the Haxby plate note. We are not aware of any other public auction appearances in the last decade, except this note which on eBay in 2013. It is very likely that this note is unique or nearly so.
