Savannah, GA- Central Rail Road and Banking Company of Georgia $10 18__ as G50a Proof PMG Choice Uncirculated 63.
The enterprise was founded in 1833 as a railroad and canal company but soon set its eyes on banking and was chartered under this name in 1835. The company survived the Civil War with most of its railroad operations ultimately becoming part of CSX Transportation while most of its banking operations were ultimately made part of Wells Fargo. The note is an exquisite red and black National Bank Note design featuring a large vignette of Liberty and another of an eagle on a federal shield. The note has a large red protector panel, borders, and counters. This note is on card with the usual small POCs in the signature lines. We are unaware of any public sales in at least the last decade and believe that this stunning note which was missing from the landmark Dorris collection of Georgia obsolete notes could be unique or nearly so.
