Providence, RI- Bank of the Republic $5 18__ G8 as Durand 1087 Proof PMG Uncirculated 62.
The Bank of the Republic was incorporated in 1854 and specialized in sending large amounts of its circulation out of state. The results were predictable, with the bank failing in 1856. The note design focal point is a large vignette of the United States Capitol before the new dome was added in the 1860s. An allegorical representation of America is at left and an oval female portrait at right. The note is printed on India paper with the usual small POCs in the signature lines. The hinge remnants on each end mentioned by PMG strongly suggest that this note may trace its provenance all the way back to D.C. Wismer. Two examples of this note were part of the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale and the design was also known to, and illustrated by, Haxby in 1988. While the design is quite common in issued form the same can not be said for Proofs.
