Port Byron, NY- Bank of Port Byron $5 May 5, 1864 G6a PMG Very Fine 25.
The bank was a short-lived institution, having opened in 1864 and remaining in business only until 1866 when it voluntarily liquidated, undoubtedly influenced by the 10% tax levied on state bank note issues. The National Bank Note Co. design includes a seldom seen rendition of America seated with an eagle at center flanked by a portrait of a young woman at left and the New York bank department die at right. This small bank had a miniscule $522 outstanding as of September 30, 1870, with a final redemption date of June 3, 1873. The note has a dark green V - FIVE - V protector. PMG mentions a stain that is fairly large, but quite light and uniform. It is not overly noticeable and the note still faces up quite well. This is a rare note that we have sold only once before, when an inferior Fine 15 example crossed the block for over $2000 in our 2011 FUN Signature Currency Auction.
