    Philadelphia, (PA)- Cooper Shop Volunteer Refreshment Saloon Check $1.62 July 23, 1863 Choice About Uncirculated
    This ancestor of the USO concept opened in 1861 and served over 400,000 soldiers, refugees, and freedmen during the Civil War. It was located at 1009 Ostego Street in Philadelphia. This check, with a wonderful full color flag vignette, was made out presumably to one of the lady volunteers in July, 1863 and is fully issued.
