Philadelphia, PA- Bank of North America Counterfeit $20 Mar. 6, 1809 C218 Hoober 305-62 PMG Choice Very Fine 35.
The bank was the nation's first commercial bank in the post colonial era and survived a number of wars and financial dislocations to become a national bank in 1864. It was the only bank allowed to keep its name in unaltered form when becoming a national bank due to its history. The design features Justice and Prosperity by a shield with a 20 on it. The note offered here is a counterfeit, of not significantly worse quality than the genuine note it was intended to mimic. As usual, however, the execution of the human figures was its downfall. Quite rare.
